E90.1 American Caramel (Issued from 1909 - 1911)

Issued over the span of 3 years, this is the set most collectors start buying first since examples from this set are the easiest to find. You should be able to get more than half way to a complete set before you run into cards that are hard to find. The majority of the cards were issued in 1909. I feel the key to determining which cards were issued in a particular year is by the style of illustration used to create the cards. I am in the process of comparing the images and will update this page in the future.

This set has many hard to find cards. I have given ratings to the cards ranging from "A– Extremely rare" to "E - Hard to find" that reflect how difficult the cards are to find. Feel free to e-mail me with your findings if they differ from the chart below. See the checklist for details.

The Mitchell, Cinn. Is the hardest to find and is considered the "T206 Wagner"
of E-Cards. It is very rare and in terms of value, this card is in line with Ty Cobb and Honus Wagner E-Cards.

Beware of those selling the Keeler, portrait (pink) card claiming it is a red background. Though red and pink are visually close in hue the backgrounds are easily distinguishable. If you fell it looks pink - it probably is.

REPRINTS:

16 cards from this set have been officially reprinted. They are all HoF players and include: Baker, Bresnahan, Chance, Cobb, Collins, Jackson (yeah, I know but he should be), Joss (horizontal), Lajoie, Mathewson, Speaker, Tinker, Wagner (bat.), Wagner (throw.), Walsh, Young (port.), Young (pitch.).

One of the easiest ways to detect these reprints is by looking for the little "20" mark on the back of the card. (See Image below in the light blue shadow box). Original cards without writing will not have any markings in this spot and be weary of any E90.1 card that had a nice clean scuff fee back but has scuffing or evidence of erasing in just this spot.

Since they are new, the white borders will seem particularly bright and the colors of the images in the reprints is darker than the originals. Ed: Thanks John.

As always, fakes can be made using computer scanners and color printers or copiers. Be careful.
